The Association offers several scholarship programs that either require an applicant to pursue a specific degree or attend a specific university. These specialized programs are funded through the generosity of individual Horatio Alger Members. Please scroll down to see if any of these programs line up with your choices.
General Eligibility
The following criteria applies to all programs below:
- High school senior
- Critical financial need ($55,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is required)
- Integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
- United States citizenship

Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation Scholarship (5 awards at $52,000 each)
The Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation Scholarship Program is funded by the Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation
- Current high school seniors who are entering their freshman year in the fall of the application year at the College of Idaho
- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0
Denny Sanford Scholarship (awards and amount vary by university)
The Denny Sanford Scholarship Program was established in 2018 and is funded by Association Member Denny Sanford, owner and founder of First Premier Bank.
- High school senior planning to attend:
- Arizona State University (25 awards at $10,000 each)
- Augustana University (Sioux Falls, SD) (6 awards at $25,000 each)
- Black Hills State University (12 awards at $12,500 each)
- Dakota State University (15 awards at $10,000 each)
- Long Island University (10 awards at $25,000 each)
- National University (San Diego, CA) (10 awards at $25,000 each)
- Nova Southeastern University (Fort Lauderdale, FL) (5 awards at $20,000 each)
- South Dakota School of Mines (4 awards at $37,500 each)
- South Dakota State University (25 awards at $10,000 each)
- University of California at San Diego (10 awards at $25,000 each)
- University of Minnesota – Twin Cities (25 awards at $10,000 each)
- University of Sioux Falls (6 awards at $25,000 each)
- University of South Dakota (25 awards at $10,000 each)
- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5
High Point University Scholarship (2 awards at $20,000 each)
The High Point University Scholarship Program is funded Association Board Member Nido R. Qubein, President of High Point University
- Current high school seniors who are entering their freshman year in the fall of the application year at the High Point University
- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0
Janet S. Dicke Scholarship (1 award at $25,000)
The Janet S. Dicke Scholarship Program is funded by Association Board Member James F. Dicke II, Chairman-CEO of Crown Equipment Corporation.
- Academic achievement (minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.5)
- Planning to pursue a degree at Trinity University (TX)
Mel Klein Scholarship (5 awards at $10,000 each)
The Mel Klein Scholarship Program is funded by Association Member Mel Klein, founder of Melvyn N. Klein Interests.
- Academic achievement (minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5)
- Planning to pursue a degree at Baylor University, Colgate University, Columbia University, Stanford University, Tulane University, or University of Texas
Montana Scholarship (50 awards at $10,000 each)
The Montana Scholarship Program is funded by Association Member Dennis R. Washington, Chairman, Washington Corporations.
- High school senior
- Academic achievement (minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0)
- Planning to pursue a degree at one of the following institutions:
- The University of Montana or one of its affiliates, which include:
• Helena College
• Missoula College
• Montana Tech at Butte
• The University of Montana at Missoula
• The University of Montana Western at Dillon - Montana State University or one of its affiliates, which include:
• Great Falls College MSU
• Montana State University Billings
• Montana State University at Bozeman
• Montana State University Northern at Havre
- The University of Montana or one of its affiliates, which include:
Patricia Cole Scholarship (6 awards at $12,500 each)
The Patricia Cole Scholarship Program is funded by Association Friend of Distinction Patricia Cole.
- Current high school seniors who exhibit a strong desire to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree in business or STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics)
- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0
Robert G. Miller – College of Idaho Scholarship (3 awards at $50,000 each)
The Robert G. Miller Scholarship Program is funded by Association Board Member Robert G. Miller, Retired Chairman & CEO of the Albertsons Companies, Inc.
- Current high school seniors who are entering their freshman year in the fall of the application year at the College of Idaho
- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0
Robert G. Miller – Boise State University Scholarship (5 awards at $16,000 each)
The Robert G. Miller Scholarship Program is funded by Association Board Member Robert G. Miller, Retired Chairman & CEO of the Albertsons Companies, Inc.
- Current high school seniors who are entering their freshman year in the fall of the application year at Boise State University
- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0
Santa Clara University – Schott Family Scholarship (3 awards at $50,000 each – amount matched by school)
The Santa Clara University – Schott Family Scholarship Program is funded by Association Member Stephen Schott, Owner and CEO of S.C.S Development Co. / Award Homes.
- High school senior planning to attend Santa Clara University
- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.4
Tandon STEM Scholarship (9 awards at $20,000 each)
The Tandon STEM Scholarship Program is funded by Association Member Chandrika K. Tandon, Chairman and Founder of Tandon Capital Associates.
- Current NYU freshman applying for entrance into the Tandon School of Engineering
- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.3
William J. Doré Scholarship (16 awards at $15,000 each)
The William J. Doré Scholarship Program is funded by Association Member William J. Doré, Chief Executive Officer of Doré Energy Corporation.
- Must be a high school senior planning to attend McNeese State University or the University at Louisiana Lafayette
- Grade point average (2.0 – 3.0)
- Must be a current resident of Louisiana
